Why Microchip Found Animals

A microchip is a rice-sized device a vet puts under the skin of the pet.  It does not harm the pet and is easy to implant.  This is NOT a GPS and cannot be used to locate your pet.  The chip only works when someone finds the pet and scans it with a chip scanner.  Pet stores like PetSmart & Petco have scanners, as well as local vets and shelters, and can scan an animal, should you need to.

We register our microchips through Found Animals by 24Pet (FKA Michelson Found Animals) via https://www.my24pet.com/.

Call 24Pet with any questions at 866-375-7387.

It’s best to login and check your chip annually (set yourself a reminder) to make sure all your information is current.  Be sure to update if you move, change your number or your emergency contact info changes.  Your vet records will show your chip number.  For STS cats, the chip number is typically on the bottom of the rabies cert or noted as the ID# on the chart.  Most of our chips start with 9810200.

If you recently adopted from us, you should get an email from 24HrPetWatch confirming the microchip was transferred to you.  If your contact info from the contract is still the same, you should be good to go and may need to just set up a password with them.  The service is FREE and you do not need to sign up for anything.  24Pet offers other services as well and if you're interested in those, you'll need to contact them directly.

When we transfer the chip to you, we list all the emergency contacts you put on your contract as well as Anita Sanders, main director, of Spay the Strays.  Please leave this as one of your contacts.  If someone finds your cat, we’ll get notification and will try to reach you.  If we cannot reach you, we will arrange to pick up and hold the cat so please contact us immediately if you lose your STS adopted cat.  Be sure to use PetcoLoveLost's FREE service as well to help bring your lost pet home.

Cats are lost during rainstorms, hurricanes and when people move.  Please be sure to put your cat in a secure carrier before you open the front door so that they cannot escape.

For previously adopted STS cats that you need to transfer the microchip to you, here's how to do it: https://www.24petwatch.com/lost-pet-protection/transfer-microchip-registration  The chip number should be on your original records as the ID number on the chart or listed on the bottom of the rabies cert.  Most of our numbers start with 9810200 orr 99100.  You can email our admin at Marketing.SpaytheStrays@aol.com to help research the numbers if you can't locate them.  Please provide your full info and the cat's name as well as original name, if you've changed it.
